What Is Dimensional Weight?
Dimensional weight (DIM weight) is a pricing method that considers the SIZE of a package, not just its weight. A big, light box takes up the same truck space as a big, heavy box — so carriers charge based on volume when the package is large relative to its weight.
The Formula
DIM Weight = (Length × Width × Height) ÷ DIM Factor
Real Carrier DIM Factors (2025)
| Carrier | DIM Factor (Domestic) | DIM Factor (International) |
|---|---|---|
| USPS | 166 | 166 |
| UPS | 139 | 139 |
| FedEx | 139 | 139 |
| DHL | 139 | 139 (5000 for cm/kg) |
💡 USPS uses 166, UPS/FedEx use 139. This means USPS is more lenient — your DIM weight will be lower with USPS, potentially saving money on large, light packages.
